The Arizona Immigration situation. There is much being said in all different directions on this topic. There is the argument that such laws will legalize racism and create a police state. Just as strong though are those of the opinion that it will cut down on crime, and decrease the size of classrooms and emergency room patients. There are good points that are made about people having to carry documents or IDs when they travel to other countries. There are those who still see it as a bottom line thing, and worry about convention revenue being pulled from the cities and state. What about those who live in Arizona and don't pay taxes? And, of course the Federal government's failure to manage the border situation. But, Article 1 of the Constitution, may only give Congress the opportunity to create immigration law.
Is the situation in Arizona about civil-rights or immigration?
Do you feel an issue such as immigration would ever encourage states to secede or take up arms against the United States Government?

Personally, I think the issue is more about the profiling than about the papers. When you travel overseas, you are required to show your passports to use many standard services, such as hotels, rental cars, banking etc. Perhaps the better thing would have been to develop a plan that requires documentation to receive certain day to day services. Not sure the best way to do it but providing the power to allow for an officer to question someone for papers opens the door for profiling. And now for the comedic response.....everyone looks Mexican in AZ. I looked it when I was a kid with as tan as I was.
What about the underlying topic? A state taking action on a Federal agenda item? Will this type of legislation lead to more radical and/or revolutionary-minded law or action?
As much as I believe that this should have been dealt with at a federal level a loooooonnnnnngggggg time ago, it was not. So Arizona as a state finally took some action. To me it's as simple as this....if any American snuck into another country and was questioned by an officer and were found to be in that country illegally what would happen to us?
The bottom line is these people are breaking the law. They use services that they pay no taxes towards, they crowd our jails and schools and our schools have to teach English as a second language just to name a few. I am in no way saying that all illegal immigrants cause problems but again they are breaking the law. And this is a nation founded on laws....and escaping religious prosecution (but that is another conversation).
The law specifically states that an officer must have lawful contact with someone, like a traffic stop where EVERYONE must show ID. Cops don't have the time or resources to randomly stop someone walking down the street and hassle them. And once again the law says they cannot do that in the first place. The majority of Arizonans are in support of this new law.
To show you that I do have a little compassion, I do find it sad that many have been here since they were small children and this country is all they know. But blaming the state or the U.S. for sending them back to their own country is not the answer....blame the parents who brought them here in the first place.
I don't believe that anyone is truly looking at the reality of this situation. Anyone who says this is simply "RACSISM", is out of touch with reality. The US Government has been ignoring this situation for a lot of years. Even today, I think the solution is to build an 'Ellis Island' type facility. This facility would be used to document, ID, and naturalize these US citizens-to-be. Vaccinations could be done, total medical exams so as not to spread diseases that we have nearly erradicated here in the US. We could as well use this as an opportunity to boost our economy with real government spending in an area that needs a solution, not to mention the jobs such a facility could provide.

I agree that it is long overdue! I don't appreciate the misinformation that the 'LEFT' has been trying to 'spew'. THERE IS NOTHING IN THIS LAW THAT IS NOT ALREADY A LEGAL ACTION.
In fact, it has already been contested by the US Supreme Court, whether a Police Officer has the right to confront a person walking down the street @ 2am and ask to see some ID. Granted 12 Noon and 2am are vastly different situations, but THE POINT IS VALID. Law enforcement has to be able to interact with anyone & everyone.
Remember, I don't believe the government should be bigger, I just believe that in order for them to do their job, this bill provides better foothold on the matter.
It all depends on where you live. Through my travels it seems apparent that people who live in AZ or in its neighboring states get the 'Immigration' problem that we face here with our 500,000+ illegal aliens. However those who do not live here see this as only the latest civil-rights pulpit from where they can receive more camera time. People who don't live in the southwest don't recognize that its a legitimate problem and just assume that we are another racist southern state.
These people make the claim that we were once all immigrants. THis is true, however we were all legal immigrants ,not Illegal. We came through Ellis island, adopted the american laws and the american way of life which meant we learned english, went to school, and paid our taxes. Those who chose not to abide by these rules were deported. Why should things be any different now.
Let everyone into the country who wants to come. If you can prove within 4 months that your children are enrolled in school, that you have gained lawful employment, that you have paid your taxes, and attended the normal classes on american history to gain citizenship then you can stay. Those who choose not to or are not able to find jobs, or think they don't need to learn English, then sorry, America isn't for you. We can't baby everyone who comes, as only the strong survive. Those who want it the most will earn their way. Those who think they deserve the easy life because its "America" will pack up and head home.
Just like playing in the NFL.. living in America is a right, not an obligation
